I am in search of a new coffee table. The one I have now (an IKEA monster left over from an old roommate who didn’t want to take it with her) is way too big for my apartment. But I don’t want just any old coffee table, I want it to stand out. Just not too far out, you know size-wise. These are the guidelines:
- It needs to be the same height as my sofa. I appreciate the esthetic of Japanese tea tables but I myself like to be able to reach for my drink without risking a back injury. And while I am not opposed to sitting on the floor however since I just got a new couch I think I better use it.
- It needs to be compact or if not compact, it needs to be versatile. Meaning, I need to be able to walk around it without the use of a map and if not, I need a damn good reason to bring one.
- It needs to be reasonably priced. Listen, one day I hope to be able to spend the same amount of money on a modern piece of furniture as I paid for my college education but for now I need to save like I am still paying for my college education.
- I want it to be unique. When I was a kid my great-grandmother had a resin coffee table inbedded with all sorts of interesting little bits of ephemera, knick-knacks, etc… I still remember it to this day. I want my coffee table to be just as memorable. :>
So I have been purusing online sites looking for the world’s coolest coffee table. And I have really found some interesting designs out there. I’ll be sharing them with you periodically and welcome your comments. The one you see above is called the Rotor from Design Within Reach. I think this design is versatile and fun. Did I mention fun in my set of guidelines? No? Well maybe I should add it or maybe not. I know myself and if I had a table this fun to play with I may never use it for it’s intended purpose. And the price tag is a bit more than I can afford but i woldn’t say its off the list just yet. Stay tuned there are more to come!
