Despite the suppression of free speech in communist Cuba, the visual art community is thriving. PBS’s Frontline features some of the artist, who with their unconventional style, are putting Cuba front and center in the international art market. Known as Los Carpinteros (”The Carpenters”), these Cuban artists are gaining the art world’s attention perhaps due in part, to their country’s focus on the arts. In Cuba they say “artists live better than lawyers”.
These are just some of the pieces by Los Carpinteros featured on the show.
