Our guest post about urban composting on Green Air featured one piece of equipment you can’t live without when recycling organic waste at home, the compost pail. Most pails are made of ceramic and usually come with some kind of filter to keep odors at bay. Used as the old stand by for many years, the ceramic pails work but you really do need to change them often to avoid unpleasant aromas. So we were delighted to read on Yanko Designabout the latest evolution in organic waste storage, The Biopod. Designed by Jonathan Fenton, The BioPod contains the waste in the hygienic vessel by using ionised air to kill bacteria and other pathogen, delaying decomposition of the food scraps. The Biopod’s LED button gradually changes color as the the waste produces methane (the gas produced from rotting food) and this lets you know when it’s time to empty the pod. The pod runs on just one 9volt battery and is dishwasher safe. The designer’s hope is that by making composting easier and more hygienic, more people will start composting.
