The Spring Bed by Thor Høy
We’re always interested to learn what makes a designer tick. We sat down with Danish designer Thor Høy to discuss his Spring Bed design and learn a little about his design inspiration.
What inspired the Spring Bed? Where and when did the idea hit you???
Thor Høy: The idea came suddenly, while I was driving my car. Normally I’m not one for the idea that design is a magical creation. I think that most things are best if they are treated and developed over time. However, in this case the idea just came to me. Sometimes an idea comes to you in the first blow.
The Spring Bed arose because I felt that bed frames made for Tempurpedic or futon mattresses were too hard and rigid. I liked the firmness of those types of beds but I also wanted a bed had a bit more give to it. I basically deconstructed the box spring mattress. I took the spring action of a foundation mattress and made it part of the frame’s design. The springs are very strong, the type you would use in vehicles and can support the weight of two to three people. The bed is square because I like square items and the bed’s corner loopholes are basically a double entendre: a practical solution for hoisting it in and out of windows but also a fun accessory for ‘hot nights!
Aha! We wondered whether the springs served a dual purpose! There is definitely something ‘sexy’ about this bed.
Thor: Although I do not reference sex directly, most people figure it out. Everyone knows sex sells … porno for instance sells big time! But sex is fast becoming vulgar and overbearing in the general public. That is why I prefer a subtle message of hot romance, where the message can be interpreted in several different ways. In any case, I received very positive feedback on the bed, more than any of my other stuff. I exhibited the bed at a trade show in Copenhagen, Denmark and surprisingly women were most enthusiastic about it! They would ask incredulous questions, all very tongue in cheek, while the men would just stand by with little blinking eyes. HAHA I found it all to be very entertaining!
Have you given any thought to a child sized version of the bed? The ‘Spring Crib’ perhaps? :>
Thor: No, I don’t have any plans for a children’s version. I think this particular design is more suited for adults.
Any plans to create more bedroom furniture?
Thor:Yes, certainly, beds, cabinets, mirrors and definitely more sexy furniture.

It’s a cool concept. Bouncy! Makes for a fun experience I imagine ;>
I like that piece of photography you feature above that bed. Very cosmo. Sleek and chic panoramic photography, especially panoramic ones, almost always evoke an ultra contemporary touch to the decor, don’t they?
Looks good. Have you considered designing a bed that has sensitive shock absorbers. Less squeking and a better ride?
Thor likes square patterns but I do prefer rectangular beds. However I really like this bed and wanna check it @ Thor’s website. Thanks for the review here.
