‘Shwick is a Booklyn Flea Market located at 6 Charles Place in the back of Little Skips in Bushwick. It’s only open on the weekends and over the last several weeks, visiting it has become a part of my weekly routine. It’s appears to be a small grassroots operation, there were less than a dozen vendors present when I visited, although the website lists many more. The wares vary, but mostly include: soaps, candles, baked goods, jewelry and clothing. Punk rock plays in the background, nothing puts you in the mood to shop like ‘Cretin’s Hop’.
I loved the unique jewelry, like this bracelet made of matchbook cars, but there was plenty to look at, a healthy mix of handmade items and collectibles. Audiophiles will love combing through more records than you can pick through in an afternoon. While fashionistas have several racks of vintage clothing to keep them busy. I’m not sure why, but there is a silkscreening station in a corner, but I’ve never seen anyone working it.
Art is everywhere. Silkscreened on shopping bags, pencil drawings, illustrations and lots of comics. I even saw a few assemblage pieces, or at least that was my interpretation. But if you’re looking for local bohemian art, you should be able to find something for your walls here.
Hungry? The Shwick has several food vendors. I didn’t sample any, trying to stick to my New Year’s diet, but the people were very cool and didn’t mind posing for pics. Shana Lawson from Got Cake had her daughter helping her out the day I visited–she was adorable!
Again, didn’t get to sample the beignets at BooQoos, but the coffee was amazing. And I loved this guy’s hat!
For more information about ‘Shwick, go to their website. There you will not only find hours of operation, but a full list of vendors.
