I would argue that there is nothing creepier than a rug that looks like your neighbor took a face plant from the Empire State Building. Even though it’s so very obvious the rug is not real, it looks like a cousin of the blow-up doll, with it’s creepy slack jawed stare, it’s still a little unsettling. I rather like the windblown look of the hair, as I imagine that’s exactly how mine would look had a just taken a colossal nose dive.

I’m sorry I’m just not one of those people who is comfortable with the naked human body, so for me this has to be the creepiest and most disturbing of any of these pieces! Not to mention my obsessive/compulsive love of symmetry is set off balance by its many dips and crevices.  Also, you’d want to pay particular attention when grabbing a book. The title, Moby Dick, could prove to be just that.

What can one say about the Surrealism chair by David Pompa? I’m sure we could have a lengthy conversation about the designer’s intent and how it makes us feel, but less just cut to the chase, it’s fucking creepy! I mean I’m not sure what repulses me the most; the arms belonging to uh, no one, jutting from the side of the chair or said arms fondness of, what looks to me like a large tumor. I can only assume this chair belongs to descendants of your favorite appendage and mine , Thing from the Adams Family.

I am moving to a new apartment on Saturday and as excited as I am to relocate to new digs, I find myself absolutely loathing the packing process. So many heavy, poorly packed boxes now line my hallway, it’s hard to imagine how all of them will find their way to my new place! If everything I owned could be packed flat I imagine I would probably move myself and save  a bundle on moving expenses. This is exactly the problem designer  Jy Yeon Suh was trying to solve when he designed his inflatable furniture and housewares. Made from sturdy fabric the line called Bojaki , uses a series of buckles to bind the  pieces suitable for sitting. The line is not just fun but is also a practical solution to the high costs of shipping.

OK, I’m sure it’s not just me, doesn’t the little rocking stool look like he’s smiling?  All kidding aside, if we all used  inflatable furniture we could reduce our carbon footprint. Using less gas, less trucks on the road would certainly help the environment.  And imagine the massive benefit nomadic people would gain from simply deflating their household into flat, easy to move pieces!

It’s not just furniture that’s inflatable but housewares also become compact.  Wonder if they are dishwasher safe?

Unique lighting options as well. Certainly fluorescents would have to used though. The heat of an incandescent bulb would melt the plastic!

City living can be tough! Sure it comes with nice perks. Rich culture diversity, world famous events, unrivaled people watching, not to mention you can get a hot dog at 3 in the morning on a Tuesday. But with all the niceties, come the not-so-niceties: very little space to call your own, deafening  noise pollution and learning to co-exist  with 8 million people who are nothing like you. That’s why, as any city dweller will tell you, everyone needs there own little comfort station, an oasis if you will, from  the urban din. Enter the Hush Pod, your own little womb of serenity.

Made of 100% recycleed wool, the pod is your own  place to escape and contemplate. A creation of design school graduate Freyja Sewell, the pod will soon be available to purchase. Till then, I recommend meditation. Or earplugs, they work well too.

I’m not crazy about spiders, but I am crazy about well designed tables! This “Walking Table” designed by Wouter Scheublin moves across the room like a spider crawling on your leg. The eight table legs are designed in such a way that when you push the table to move it, the legs pick up and walk the table! Its pretty crazy to watch. The amazing thing is that the table stays level the whole time, so you can walk your dinner table right from the dining room to the living room to catch your favorite tv show without disturbing a thing.

Of course wheels would get the same results, but not the bragging rights of owning a table that would make spiderman jealous!

I always loved hammocks, the association with springtime and lazy summer days. Just laying on that comfortable netting as you drift off into a impromptu nap. Well it seems Henry Sgourakis was inspired by hammocks as well when he created the NOOK chair.
