I’d describe the Rewrite desk’s unusual shape as a work bubble for easily distracted people. Designed by Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi founders of Danish design studio GamFratesi the desk was originally designed for an exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen, the desk is now part of a new line with Ligne Roset. I like it for two reasons. Aesthetically I find it womb like, a soft, neutral place to bring your ideas to life. And two, it’s portable, you can easily place it in a corner when not in use, keeping the work day out of sight and out of mind.

Imagine a whole office filled with filled with pod-like Rewrite desks. Really 1960′s science fiction! You can sit down now.

The Calender Vase by Koo Jin-Woog from Nothing Design Group kills to birds with one stone, calender and flower bud vase all in one.

We got a kick out of the Illuminated Chair by Martha Sturdy. It’s lit from within and changes colors for a subtle drama.

A unique bicycle helmet hanger by designer Sung Kug Kim was part of the Contemporary British Design Exhibits.

We thought Myungseo Kang’s Book Lights were really clever. The lights gave off a nice subtle glow.

Umbra unveiled the winners of their sixth annual Umbra|Pratt Design Competition.

The name of this piece-’Oh, the Farmer and the Cowman Should be Friends’. A one off piece designed for Timothy Taylor Gallery in London by designer Ron Arad. The United States make an excellent storage space for your favorite tomes. Wouldn’t it be fun to give each state a theme? For instance: western novels in Arizona, beach reads in Florida, Oprah’s book club in Illinois.

Missing from this installation- Alaska and Hawaii. They are still part of the United States aren’t they? We can understand why he might boot Alaska out of the picture (Sarah Palin, bleh!) but Hawaii is the birth place of our current President! Missing states aside, it’s still a very impressive and fun design.

We never understood Vespa fanaticism until we rode one ourselves. Feeling the wind in your hair while darting in and out of traffic can be intoxicating.  When your riding a Vespa, you can feel like a rebel without all the biker hang ups. They either provide: a death defying ride or a sober adventure, it’s your choice. There is no bad ass bravado surrounding the experience, its all about what you make it.

Now that we have drunk the “Kool Aid’ we can fully appreciate the truly unique office chair by Bel & Bel. The leather chairs are handmade using the front shield and spare parts of old Vespas. A wonderful way to immortalize the Vespa while keeping scrap metal out of the junk heaps.

OK you can’t cruise it down the block…or wait maybe you can! Imagine racing Vespa chair around the office. We’re pretty sure you’d be the only one sportin’ this ride! And as far as we are concerned, that deserves a first place prize just for effort.

Use everything! That’s the Bel & Bel motto. An old handlebar becomes an intriguing art piece. Freaky? Yes! And that’s why we want it.

Television set decorators certainly have their work cut out for them, especially for high profile period shows like AMC’s Emmy-winning “Mad Men.” It’s up to the set decorator to ensure that every room that a character walks into is dressed and accessorized impeccably and realistically for that time period. Watching TV today, in many ways is like a crash course in modern and contemporary design and this is in part, thanks to the supremely talented set decorators out there.

One brand that has a prominent presence on the silver screen is Herman Miller. Known today for it’s line of modern office classics designed by the likes of George Nelson, Charles & Ray Eames, Alexander Girard and Robert Probst – Herman Miller’s focus shifted from home decor to office decor in the late 40s and lasted through the 60s. It was during this time that many of Herman Miller’s most iconic designs came to fruition. The Eames Lounge Chair, for instance, has been featured in many movies and TV shows over the years, including “Frasier,” “House,” and in the Adam Sandler comedy, “Click.” More recently the Eames Aluminum chairs were featured in the televised Democratic Presidential debates between Hilary Clinton and Barak Obama.

Showcasing their products on high profile television shows only contributes to the brand’s longevity.
