I have always had a thing for Airstream trailers. Combining the gorgeous vintage design of the outside of an airstream with the clean classy new look of a modern renovation makes this truly a beautiful project.

Architect Matthew Hofmann has used mostly sustainable materials like bamboo floors to redesign the 158 square foot space of this classic 1970 trailer.

Check this it out! Found this on one of my favorite blogs Dude Craft. A sphere made entirely of books! It’s being displayed at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts , an awesome and unique (it’s the only one like it in the U.S.) organization dedicated to the book as a vibrant contemporary art form. I’m always impressed by people who make things out of books. Have you seen the book cutting art by artist such as Brian Dettmer? His collection called ‘Book Autopsies’ are featured below.

Designs like these must take literally days to create. I just don’t have the patience for this type of thing. I wonder, do they have some sort of plan or do they just start cutting? Any book artist care to comment?

Winter always me think of warm, cozy interiors. On a recent trip to Aspen, Colorado I saw so many examples of modern ski lodge decor. Big pieces, fur, animal antlers and lots and lots of wood! Finally a compromise between ski cabin coziness and clean, sleek NYC apartments. I now see, there is no need to long for both, I can easily  marry city sophistication with chic woodsy lifestyle! Above is the lobby of the Sky Hotel, what was formerly the Aspen Club Lodge.

I used to work there as a kid and noticed right away, the inner structure remained exactly the same, the decor however, couldn’t be more different. Think-mountain cabin meets modern chic. Walking into the lobby the first thing you notice are the huge leather chairs trimmed with fur (mink?) and white side chairs, accented beautifully with handcrafted wood tables. Elegantly appointed, the hotel offers impressive amenities to it’s patrons. My friend and I graciously enjoyed the hot cider and oatmeal cookies available in the lobby during the ski day.

Inside the lodge’s, Sky Lounge, low lying sectional sofas rest near a blazing fireplace. The large windows look out to a steaming heated pool and the looming majesty of Aspen Mountain – the perfect apres ski spot- enough said. This well-appointed mountain lodge inspired me to gather a few examples of what Modern Winter chic:

No mountain home is complete without the head of some unfortunate animal prominently displayed over a it’s fireplace. I snapped this unlucky fellow at Kemo Sabe, a popular upscale leather goods store in Aspen, Colorado.

If you like the style but not the carnage, you might want to try ‘going faux’. Cardboard Deer Antlers are a friendlier way to replicate this style. You get a modern outdoorsy feel without, the cold accusatory stare of a mounted animal. Courtesy of Cardboard Safari

Any mountain lodge worth it’s weight, has a huge roaring fireplace. I prefer a more sophisticated, contemporary hearth like this one. And don’t forget a fire pit! Winter dwellers love to stand around a warm fire in the outdoors. There’s nothing better than gathering underneath the stars recounting the day’s winter activities.

The Calender Vase by Koo Jin-Woog from Nothing Design Group kills to birds with one stone, calender and flower bud vase all in one.

We used to be a fan of those Hoarder shows, but after awhile we became so frustrated with those folks who were so attached to their garbage we stopped watching. While we have occasionally been guilty of sentimental collecting, we are die hard purgers. Why can’t they just get organized? So when another site mentioned the Cargo Chair above would make a perfect chair for hoarders, it got us thinking. Maybe they just lack the right furniture?  Perhaps designer Stephan Schulz will be inspired to create a whole line of hoarder furniture?

Stopped by Dijital Fix on Bedford in Williamsburg, Brooklyn the other day and stumbled upon this menacing musical sculpture. Part hip-hop, part Memorex Ad ,we loved it so much we decided to find out more about who designed it. An inquiry with the sales guy at the counter provided us with a few clues:  the designer was a friend of the owners and this chair may have been in a big time music video. After some quick research, he was able to come up with a website for the artist.  This is what we discovered.

The designer Mikal Jessie Hameed aka M11X, has a background in film and music video production. The son of a jazz musician, Mikal spent most of his early years acting and performing. A move to NYC transformed him into a set designer, and eventually production designer.

The site doesn’t give much information on the chairs themselves, but this quote by MX11 explains his philosophy behind the project.

By toying with the power of music and endless design possibilities I can brings beats, rhythm, and life into painting, furniture, and mixed media sculpture… M11X
