Before Ikea became mainstream if you wanted to build your own cheap DIY furniture you had to look no further than your nearest construction site. Back in the day a few sturdy cinder blocks, a plank of wood and a little ingenuity produced many a bookshelf. Not exactly elegant we agree but certainly functional for loads of young people just starting out. If you’re feeling a bit nostalgic for your own salad days or are in the flat out in the midst of them, Sergio Silva’s modern approach to the drab block will help inspire your inner DIY. The Walnut Block adds a touch of class it’s concrete cousin is soarly lacking. The Block is also available in an elegant but more delicate Ceramic. Either is sure to produce a dignified piece of furniture you will be proud to display, no trip to Ikea needed.
Ole Jensen designed this whimsical soft Rubber Tub for the Mindcraft 2008 exhibition held in Milan. Modeled after his famous washing up bowl, the Rubber Tub is made of the same EPDM rubber as his bowl making it extremely durable. The tub, like Ole Jensen bowl is sturdy but pliable so it collapses when not in use, making it convienent to store. And it’s easy to use, simply attach it’s hose to a water source and when it’s full plug the hose with the cute little cork stopper provided. A playful twist to outdoor bathing, the tub is a whimsical alternative to blow up pools. Leave it to Ole Jensen to find yet another simple, yet well designed way to make washing up more fun.

Robert Therrien leans towards the domestic in his newest exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery 24 Street. His colossal interpretations of everyday items transport us back to childhood when the world really was larger than life. Gargantuan dishes, giant pots and pans and folding furniture that could seat a massive poker game are just part of Robert Therrien’s current works on display at the New York City gallery through July 11, 2008. Go to the Gagosian Gallery website for more details.
Although this little “vase” seems simple and sweet, we can’t help but think it looks like something one would make while serving time in prison. Hey, maybe that could be a new niche? Prison goods! With all that time on their hands they must come up with lots of clever items, don’t you think? We’re pretty sure these are not prison wares but if you think this is just what you need to liven up your home/work/cell they can be found on Design Boom.
The Plamp from designer Piotr Woronkowicz utilizes vertical space by providing a hanging lamp which is also a vase. The ”roots” on the Plamp are a very sweet touch and we like it’s slim design. Your flowers do double duty as they cast shadows on the wall when the Plamp is lit.
With rising energy costs, we may all have to switch to efficient LED lighting in the future. Already way ahead of the curve is designer Billy May, his Torn Light concept brings a soft glow to your interiors using integrated LED lights. We love it because it looks as if you have torn back the walls to another dimension!
If you think this looks photoshopped it’s not. You can check out the lights prior to installation on Billy’s page by clicking here. Above is The Crevice Torn Light.
Well our Dutch is not that great but from what we can decipher this monstorous table was built to accomodate 22 players, the equivalent of two real life football (soccer) teams. The table was built for Amstel Beer in celebration of this year’s Euro 2008 football tournament. Good for the Dutch since they are doing so well this year! Perhaps it will continue to bring them more luck.
If your Dutch is better than ours, you can go to Airworks site for more info.
Just because we live in the city doesn’t mean we urban dwellers don’t enjoy our time outdoors. You’ll be hard pressed to find a patch of grass to call your own at any of one of the city’s parks during the summer. So if your going to take the time to stake out your claim to a sunny spot, you’d better pack a lunch. Picnic baskets have come along way since the tired old wicker basket your grandma may have owned. Modern designs, improved handling and tasteful dinnerware have given the picnic basket a refreshingly new face lift. This tote from French Bull features their signature colorful designs and has everything you need to serve a a party of four. Bon Appetit!
